The Early Works of Famous Authors

by :
Rachel Lewis

I think some of my previous blog posts have alluded to the fact that I am a keen reader and really promote it among learners of English. In writing this post, I am looking at my favourite author in a new light.

As a typical girl I am a fan of most romantic literature and have for many years been a Jane Austen addict. I could read Pride and Prejudice every summer if it weren't for the judgemental remarks of my family! I recently left the full time job I have been doing for a year, and was given a gift card by the generous colleagues I was working with. Keen to cheer myself up, I took said gift card with me the following day to my local book store, and was attracted to a book encompassing many of Jane Austen's pieces from her teenage years as well as her unfinished novels.

I should say that I haven't yet finished this book. What strikes me is that I am seeing how Jane Austen became the fantastic author of Pride and Prejudice and other classics, and it is evident that she started out as any other young girl. I think I believed that she was born a genius and didn't have to work very hard to create the amazing books I love so well. No. What I am reading shows the improvement Jane Austen made on her early works and how she developed as an author over several years of hard graft, resulting in the ability to write those novels.

I remember writing "creative fiction" in English lessons at school, and feeling appalled and angered by my inability to write anything worth reading. These lessons, when I was probably 14 or 15, came at the wrong time - I was too shy to really explore my creativity. Perhaps I shouldn't have been so hard on myself and instead could have redrafted and tried different styles. As a blogger it is natural that I enjoy writing, so why didn't I use this skill more? This is a question I don't know the answer to, but as a qualified teacher, I now feel it my duty to impress on the young people in my classroom that they do all have the ability to be creative.

If you have a favourite author, it might be possible to find some of the work they started on. However, the inset page of this book I am reading states that Jane Austen is the exception, as other famous authors have burnt their first attempts at writing, maybe suggesting my embarrassment was not an overreaction!

Discussion

Who's your favourite author? Do you enjoy reading and/or writing?

As far as Jane Austen, the irst time I send the manuscript to a publisher , was denied , as the owner , was sexist , Jane, was sad , why just had a breakup and had put all their illusions in the book he wrote, which he called " First Impressions " . His father , seeing her sad, decided to send another manuscript I had of her , to other publishing houses , which will charm you and accept your manuscript , was Sense and SENSITIVITY . in 1813 after sixteen years of being rejected , "Pride and Prejudice " , a masterpiece finally saw the light .
The publisher decided to change the name of the manuscript, and they considered that it was not in the novel.
And then, well born Jane Austen :)

Hi Gali_N89 and thanks for your interesting comment. Are you a Jane Austen fan? I love her novels. :)

It sounds like you may be using a Translate programme or website because they sometimes produce text that sounds a bit unnatural. I'd strongly encourage you to write in your own words as much as you can! Best wishes,

Jonathan (LearnEnglish Teens Team)

I really enjoy reading and writing. There are so many authors that I like. I grew up reading Mark Twain books. He's a great writer and I enjoy reading about the adventures of his characters even now. Moony Witcher is one of my favourite writers too. Now I enjoy classic literature and I like authors like Jane Austen and Tolstoy. They are wonderful. Nicholas Sparks writes really touching stories that I enjoy reading during the summertime.

One of my favourite authors is Herbert Wells, he wrote so many great stories and his science-fiction novels were full of new and amazing ideas, which are used in modern movies. Also I think Wells was intended to warn humanity about consequences of its activity in different types of science, he tried to tell what are the main traits of character of every person should be. He was successful in it, his books are still very popular nowadays.
Bthw, some of his novels were quite scary for me, especially when I read them for the first time. But this fact only made my good impression stronger.

Hi, ellen.
I don't really know. It can sound strange but I am not focused anywhere. Sometimes I like medicine but I am not the correct person to be the one to who depends the life of sb. I am weak. When I think economy, being in the middle of all these accounts, it is not me.
I am nowhere.
What about? Will you go to a general high school or to proffesional one? What is the educational system like in you country.

I have so many fave writers. I can't choose one only, because I always discover a new one, who is better than all the rest. For example, I like Scot Fitzgerald, Colette, Khaled Hosseini, Jane Austen, Goethe, Agatha Kristi, William Faulkner, Orhan Pamuk, Gustav Flauber, Onore de Balzac, Charles Bukowski, the sisters Bronte, Dostoevsky and many, many others. I like both writing and reading. My professors at school always tell me I'm talented for writing, and when I was little, I wanted to be a writer, but I changed my mind about it. I don't want to be a writer anymore, but I still like writing and I keep a diary and write short stories and essays.

Luanne Rice too is a good author as well as Virgina C.Andrews from whose books I have read 8 or 9 but they were all translated into french... I actually read french books more than english ones because we do master french better than english here in Tunisia but I am trying these days to focus on english so that I can improve my skills ..

My favorite author is JK Rowling. I read all 7 books in Harry Potter Series. I love this story so much, I've read them so many times since I was 11. Rowling is so talented. She made me cry when I read to the part that Sirius passed away and then Dumbledore was killed in the next book. And I always burst out laughing by the jokes of the twins Fred and George. I was sad this series has come to the end. I expect Rowling write more, maybe HP's future or other different novels.
I haven't read Pride and Prejudice, but I watched the movie. I like the scene at the end when Mr.Darcy proposes Elizabeth on the field at dawn. So romantic!
