My ''favorite'' exam is the listening one (lol). In the beginning I hated listening exams because I could not understand. But now it is better. I have (practically) no problems to understand the CD. :)

Hi
I get to listen a part of a story on my last exam and to put the correct words on their place, but it was so difficult..
Firstly, because the person who was speaking was not too clear
secondly, the audio was not good... And I got 0 points in tha exercise...
What can I do in these situations??

Hi ilda,
Although your writing skill is fair enough but in aforesaid situation you might need to practice some concentration exercises. Listen to good English as much as possible. The more you listen, the more you get. Watching English movies and dramas etc. with subtitles develops listening, speaking and vocabulary skills.

That's a good tip, hashi. It's important to concentrate. It's extra important in listening exams where you can only listen once. (Was you exam like that, Ilda?)

Here's another tip. You can do this before the audio starts. Look at the gap, look at the words before and after the gap, and try to guess what the word could be. Then when you listen, you may already have an idea.

And if you don't know, you can always have a guess! That's better than leaving an answer blank.

Does anyone have any other listening tips?

Hey Jessi, you're right people do speak so fast but remember you don't have to hear or understand every word.  The important thing is to try and understand the 'key' words and guess the meaning from these.  We usually say the 'key' words a little bit louder than other words.  Try listening to the 'key' words next time you watch TV or in our Video zone and Video UK section.  Good luck!

Hi Ashfaq. To improve your listening it is important to listen to short recordings every day. Try to imagine the situation before you listen and try to guess what type of words or information you are going to hear. For example if you are listening to a weather report you will hear 'cities', 'weather words' and 'numbers' to describe the temperature.

Remember you don't have to hear or understand every word, if you can hear and understand the key words you will be able to understand the meaning. Key words are generally spoken a bit louder than non-important words.

Good luck. Start by watching the news for 5 minutes tonight! Or listen to the videos in Video UK and Video zone.

Hi Ashfaq, We're pleased that you are trying our suggestions. To improve your writing why don't you find a short article (100-150 words) in your coursebook, newspaper or on your favourite website. Read it a few times. Then re-write it in your notebook (but don't look at the original article). When you have finished writing compare your writing with the original article. This is something you can do at home and and you can check it without a teacher!

We are going to have a new section called 'improve your writing' on this website soon. So keep your eyes open!!!
