In this type of exercise you have to choose the correct word from two or three possible answers. Follow our advice:

  • Read the sentence carefully before and after the word.
  • Think carefully about the meaning of the text.
  • Choose the words you know are right.
  • Eliminate any words that you know are wrong.
  • Some words are similar in meaning but there is a difference. Do you know the difference between say and tell? make and do? rob and steal? fun and funny?
  • Sometimes the options are wrong because the spelling is wrong.
  • If you don’t know an answer, choose a word. You may be right!
  • Check your answers carefully when you finish.

Hi! Great question. Well, say and tell have pretty much the same meaning, but they are each used in different phrases.

  • say hello / goodbye / yes / no / something
  • tell a lie / the truth / a story / a joke / a secret

With among and between, the main difference is that between is used for two things but among is used for three or more things. For example:

  • between you and me / between New York and Los Angeles / between those two trees
  • among friends / among my classmates / among the population

There’s another difference too. Between is used for things which are separate and distinct, but among is used for things which are collected in a group.

  • My parents are letting me get a new pet. I can choose between a cat, a dog, a fish and a rabbit. (they are four distinct animals)
  • Among the students in my school, Maths is regarded as the most important subject. (students = a group)

I hope that helps!
