Remember that your gestures and body language can help you communicate. These tips will help you to get your message across, without any words at all.

  • Mime what you want to say.
  • Nod your head to show that you understand.
  • Remember! In English-speaking cultures it is polite to look at the person you are speaking to in the eye. It is not rude.
  • Look confused when you don’t understand. This tells the person you are speaking to that you would like an explanation.

This advice is very useful for all English language communication.  Is it the same for your language and culture?  Tell us what people do in your country that is different.

Yes, it's the same in my country, but I'm not very good at non-verbal language, I think it's much harder. I've never tried that, because I haven't been in that situation yet, but I think I couldn't make it.

I feel a bit problem while talking in english or even in my own mother language, looking into the eyes of the other person but now i am trying to overcome this problem.

Good point m.tayyab! In some cultures it may be rude or strange to look into the other person's eyes.  But it is perfectly normal in most English speaking cultures. So keep trying.  Eye contact always makes the conversation feel more natural and will score you extra points in a speaking exam!
