Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the UK on February 14th. It is a celebration of love between husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends and sometimes just friends together! We celebrate Valentine’s Day in a variety of ways, and it is often celebrated by people whether they have a boyfriend or girlfriend, or not!

Here are some of the ways in which we celebrate Valentine’s Day in England.

Cards
Many people send and receive cards from their loved ones. Cards are usually sent from boyfriends to girlfriends, and sometimes also to someone who is too shy to tell someone of their feelings! However, cards are not just sent between boyfriends and girlfriends or husbands and wives. My Mum, for example, has sent me and my sister Valentine’s Day cards since we were 12, each time signing off the card with ‘love from ?’ Although we know it’s from her because of her handwriting!

Poems
Often, you can find love poems written inside a Valentine’s card. you can buy cards with a poem already written inside, or some people make them up to describe the special love between them and their partner. Poems are often used to express love. William Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets, a special kind of poem, and lots of these were about love. One of these, sonnet 18, is often quoted on Valentine’s Day:
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimmed;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,

Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

by William Shakespeare, sonnet 18

In this poem, Shakespeare talks about how the woman he loves is more beautiful than a summer’s day - she is too lovely to use this metaphor. Instead, her eternal beauty shall not fade like summer does, and she is immortal in the poem.

Even from a young age, children write poems for Valentine’s Day. There is a popular poem which begins, ‘roses are red, violets are blue’. the next line changes, and the last word must rhyme with ‘blue’.

You can create romantic versions, such as:
Roses are red, violets are blue, Sugar is sweet, and so are you!

However, you can change it to be a silly poem that you can give to your brother or sister, or a friend. For example, my favourite when I was younger was:
Roses are red, violets are blue, Give me ten pounds, and I will love you! and Roses are red, violets are blue, Onions stink, and so do you!

Presents
As well as cards, people often send and receive gifts from their loved ones. Traditionally, flowers (especially red roses) and chocolates are favourite gifts. However, recently, teddy bears have become a popular gift from boys to girls, and balloons, too, are seen everywhere on Valentine’s Day! Personally, I like homemade gifts best - a homemade heart-shaped cookie or cake shows that someone has put time and effort into the present. Last year, to cheer up all her single friends, one of my friends made everyone homemade biscuits and decorated them with edible love hearts!

Discussion

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Can you write your own version of a 'Roses are red ...' poem?

Hi TeresaC! Thsnks. I write sports and adventurous stories. Here are my poems:
The Ball:
Enemy it is to the bat,
Mates it is with the hands,
Loves the bowler, it does,
Listens to orders of the master, it does,
Swings if told,
Reverse swings if said so,
Let's runs off if cheaoly bowled,
Get's wickets when told!
It gets worldclass batsmen like
Cook, Amla, Bradman off!
Helps bowlers like
Anderson, Broad and Steyn get hauls!
Bowler's slave!
Batsman's slaughter!
"Help me!" is the bowler's cry to its lifegaurd,
"Spare me!" is the batsman's cry to his foe,
Worldclass bowlers like Jimmy Anderson understand it,
Calm players like Alastair Cook read the "book" and then play it,
Wicket holders like Stuart Broad love to order it,
Players like De'villiers just smash it,
'Who cares?" They say,
Enemy to the dressing-roomers,
But mates to the on-fielders,
"You work hard and I'll support you!" It says,
The ball cruel and merciful,
Obey's the way it's delivered,
Is a loyal servent,
It is,
Bowlers and fielders clutch to it for life!,
Batsman's and the one's in dressing room run from it for life!,
The ball is great,
The ball is merciful,
Is only hope for the fielding captain!

My Favourite Cricketer:
The tall,
The blonde,
The cute,
The best ever bowler,
The powerful allrounder,
Is none other than,
STUART BROAD!
STUART BROAD!!!
The Notts Outlaw player,
The England capped,
The Nott,
The son of the ex cricketer,
The son of the Broad Appeal director,
BC Broad,
Is none other than,
STUART BROAD!
STUART BROAD!!!
The T20 captain,
The test and ODI vice captain,
The top bowler in all of 2013,
Is none other than,
STUART BROAD!
STUART BROAD!!!!!!!

Hi justcricketforme! These are some more brilliant poems! They help me understand cricket better because I don't know much about the sport at all. I can really see your passion for cricket in them! :)

Hi TeresaC! Thanks, you are making me blush! Well, I need your help. I'm helping one of my friends to speak in a British accent since in a school drama she's a British girl. Me and my British friend have tried are best on trying to teach her. She can pronounce the alphabet well but not the words. Can you tell me any tip for teaching her? If you do, please tell.

Hi justcricketforme! I suggest practising some tongue twisters with her, because they will help her pronounce certain sounds. For example, 'how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?' uses the 'ch' and the 'w' sounds and might help her! Also, if it is a well-known play, try and watch a clip of it online and ask her to repeat after the actor. Singing in English can be useful too - choose a slow song and ask her to sing along to it! I hope these help :)

Hi TeresaC! Thanks. I like writing adventure and sports. I even sent one to get published! Here is a poem of mine written on Friendship:
"Friendship":
It's a golden chain,
Bolted together strongly,
Which no one can break!
Love flows in it,
No hate!
Is always open for new ones,
So they can be mates!]This is no ordinary chain,
It cannot break!
It stands strong in sunshine or rain,
It stands bold in rain or su=hine!
It passes love and peace,
It contains people,
People who you trust,
People who you choose,
People who you like,
So, my dears,
I tell you this is no ordinary chain!

I hope you like it, guys! And tell me how it is, please!

Hi justcricketforme! What a wonderful poem - I really like it! My favourite lines are the first ones - I love how you've described friendship as 'golden chain bolted together strongly which no one can break'. How long did it take you to write this poem? And good luck with the story you've sent to be published - I'm sure it's fantastic!

I agree with you that Valentines day is being celebrated worldwide in many different ways. It is also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine, and it is observed on February 14 each year. It is definitely a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship. In connection with your post, It is good to know how Valentines day is being celebrated in England in a very romantic way.

Hi! I want to write some poems of mine!

The Hopes Which Rise

When the hopes rise on the horizon
The sun shines on the sky on
When you come to my dreams indeed
The moon smiles at me out of spite
Clouds also join the moon on a sudden
They shade your nice heart which is similar to a golden

Bluish

My favourite color is blue
The blue of the sky, the sea
I find myself
In the blue dreams, I see
I see the sky
Which is hidden behind my fears
A silver lining is rising
Among my blues, my silence
My fears are disappearing on the horizon
For the sake of the blue tears

Likely

You'd love me in silence likely
Without thinking by looking at my heart
We'd meet in a place in dark
We'd talk without a word, hark

That's the voice of my heart
That's the breath of your soul
We'd agree with the words
Which come from our souls when it's cool

Our breath'd warm each other
Our hands'd touch likely
It was as a dream fairly
My heart is yours, yours is mine - just as I fancy
