Classical music and mushrooms!

by RuthieBlogger

In my opinion, classical music is a bit like mushrooms! You don’t see the link? Let me explain. When I was younger, I didn’t like mushrooms. They had a horrible texture and no taste at all, and I used to pick them out of every dish in which my mum tried to hide them. But gradually, as I got older, my view changed. I started to enjoy mushroom-flavoured things like soups and sauces, and eventually I found I could eat mushrooms without grimacing. And now I even quite enjoy them! So my mum’s prediction that I would ‘grow into them’ was proved quite correct.

Similarly, I always thought of classical music as this boring genre that only boring grown-ups liked. Whenever my parents played it in the car, I would count down the minutes until we could change it to my preferred genre: pop. But while at university, I found that calming orchestral music was just the thing for library revision playlists – it had no lyrics to distract me, and the pieces tended to be very long: perfect for long work sessions!

Recently, my developing relationship with classical music reached a new level when I voluntarily chose to go to a ballet. Admittedly, it was the dancing that originally attracted me, but once there I thoroughly enjoyed the music too. It was The Nutcracker, and I was surprised by just how much of the music I recognised! The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, The Russian Dance, The Waltz of the Flowers – they all sounded familiar. I didn’t know how I knew them, I just knew that I did! And I loved them. My parents would be proud.

Do you listen to classical music? Is there anything you like now that you didn't use to like when you were younger?

Yes, I listen to classical music when its necessary, like for studying, reading, meditating, in a restaurant, for making homework’s, when I need to be completely concentrated. I choose listening Classical music for making these activities because it doesn’t have lyrics and this allows me to stay completely focus and to be relax. When I was younger I didn’t like salads and fruits, but then I realized it was good and important to my health, so I change my mentally and gave me the opportunity to try again and finally I like it. Also, I was very shy and I didn’t like to share with other people, but then I realize that for life its important to communicate with others and now knowing new persons is a pleasure to me. Finally, in terms of music taste I didn’t like the music that my parents hear, like rock, 80s and 90s music, boy bands, Salsa, Merengue, Rap, between others, but then of listening for long years the same songs I started liking it and finally I downloaded that sorts of music into my playlist.

I am really into classical music, I consider it is a beautiful art and is wonderful for concentration and meditation. Sometimes when I feel stressed, I listen to this gender and it rather transports me to another universe. I play a bit of piano, but I would love to be able to play a classical song, the thing is that they are complicated and I really admire those who can, and the ones who wrote them like Beethoven, Mozart, Bash, and Chaikovsky. As a kid I was quite meticulous about the food, I still am but not as much,I really disliked broccoli and to get out of eating it I said that that was a tree and that by eating this would I would end up in deforestation. Now a days my two younger siblings and I struggle because there is never a sufficient amount of broccoli.

Personally, Classical music is not the type of music I listen to. Although, if I am in a restaurant or places related, is the kind of music I would like to listen to. Something that I did not like at all when I was younger was mathematics. It was horror because they were difficult to understand. However, after understanding it and seeing its use throughout life, I began to like it more.

I do not hear classical music in my daily life, but I gave it a try years ago for trying to concentrate for school to read and study, but this does not help me to concentrate more so I stop listening to it. When I was younger I did not listen to vallenato, bachata or merengue because I didn't like it and i didnt know how to dance at that time, I was used to hear pop and reggaeton, but with the past of the years I gave it a try to start dancing and the first genres that I start dancing were bachata, merengue and salsa, then i start to listen more Colombian songs and i found the vallenato and nowadays i like it.

Personally, classical music is not a genre that I listen to for pleasure since many times it seems a bit boring, but I agree that many times when I need to do a job for school my favorite type of music distract myself, so in those cases classical music is my best option because in one way or another it relaxes me and makes me concentrate and finish more easily. On the other hand, I think that as you get older you get used to some flavors and they are not as unpleasant as before, for example, I remember that when I was younger I did not like papaya much but as I grew up, I realized that it was very healthy and that I can use it for my own good as well as classical music.

My family and I had never been to listen to classical music, when I was younger I considered it boring. Although I don't listen to it often now, I find classical music beautiful and emotional because it tells stories, and I had never considered listening to it or even like it

I am not a big fan of classical music, however I appreciate the art behind it and if there was a big orchestra coming to my city and I had the chance to go listen to them, I would be more than honored to go. If my 8 year old self would see my current playlist she would not be happy that there are a couple songs that used to make me cry, the lyrics were full of emotion and it used to put me really sad when my dad played them, so I simply did not like them. But, nowadays i see how beautiful those songs are and although I would never admit to my parents that I like them, I play them whenever I am in the mood for something to sing to.

I do listen to classical music, it's not my main genre, but when i do listen to it, i enjoy it a lot. The same thing happened to me, at first i thought that classical music was boring and i couldn't stand listening to it, but now that i'm older i appreciate it more. The same has happened with other genres and singers. For example, most of the times when there is a popular song or singer, I get really annoyed and start disliking their music but then as time goes on i learn to like their songs. This happened to me with the singer Billie Eilish.

I’m completely in agreement with the text! Classical music is a great tool to set your mind blank when you get to study. Even though I commonly don’t listen to this type of music (just because i'm really into Latin Rock and im always listening to it), I emphatically recommend it to relax when you are stressed or if you enjoy listening to music while you are studying, but cant focus due to lyrics. On the other hand, when I was younger I hated Rock in Spanish. When my parents listened to it when I was close I got extremely bored. Who would say that seven years later, this musical genre would be my favourite!! The same happened to me with avocados, I couldn’t even try them ten years ago, but then I started loving them as I haven't liked any fruit.

On certain occasions, I do listen to classical music, for example when I need total concentration to study for an exam. I also listen to it when I feel stressed, because I really like the sound of the piano, and as we know the piano is one of the instruments that is used for this type of music. There have been many things that I usually did not like when I was younger, for example, I did not like reggaeton, because it was a genre of music, which was very uncommon to listen to, until I started to grow up a little more and began to have a little more contact with this genre.

Classical music is pretty enjoyable under different circumstances, like doing writing-based work or even drawing. I used to find it boring too, but I've become accustomed to listening to it on the regular. Chill Beat style music is almost on the same level as classical due to how calm it is and how relaxing it is too.

When I was younger I was never interested in classical music, it was from my perspective a boring and flat genre, listened only by adults. But, evidently I was growing up and my conception of this sort was transforming; each time having a more open position towards this genre, until it was enough to give me some time to listen to this unpopular sort. At the moment I identified that it was totally different from the music I usually listened to (reggaeton), and that it was just as relaxing as jazz. This experience made me think about the wrong conception (a kind of prejudice) and ignorance that I had about classical music. Now, after having experimented, I can say that this type of genre is very useful, it helps you concentrate, and it facilitates the fluidity of your ideas and thoughts. As we know, people are constantly under the influence of context, and the various stimulus and circumstances that make it up, so our vision of the world, personality, and tastes are always being changed (even if the change is minimal). There are musical genres that I didn't like before but now I do (for example classical music or jazz), as well as sorts that I liked before but now I don't (electronic). Which leads us to think that we should not be so closed to our own perspective, instead we have to start being open to new things and experiences.

I never got used to listening to classical music and it didn't bother me to listen to it until I entered high school and tried to do homework with music, so the genre that helps me focus the most on homework is classical music and now it attracts me much more than before. On the other hand when I was little I did not like salsa or bachata I thought it was music for adults, but now that I am a teenager and that i start having parties and there they play that type of music to dance I understand why people like these genres I started to like it too ,and not only at parties but also to listen to this music sometimes, so in the end I ended up attracting to these genres more than I thought.

Honestly, I don’t like classical music because I feel like it's a bit irritating and stressful at a certain point, and that music is supposed to be relax or anything else but stressful. I'm not saying that when I listen to this music it bothers me, but if it continues for a long time it becomes boring. However, sometimes I do listen to piano music, although it's not so often. When I was younger I didn’t used to listen to reggaeton, because I didn’t liked it, but now I started listening to it more with my friends and from listening to it so much I started liking it.

Personally, classical music is not my favorite type of music to listen, I definitely prefer pop, or reggaeton however I do not hate it, it mostly depends on the context in which it is being played. Something that I used to hate when I was younger were the vegetables, I did not like the flavor and texture of them, but my parents continue to insist for me to eat them. After year of fights because of that I start to eat them and to actually enjoy them because of my intent of a fitness journey, that took me into creating a toon of new and different recipes that I actually enjoy and like.
