More messages ... Who is sending them? And what can Kay do?

89

Kay got another message as she was leaving for school.

unknown number: You’re so ugly.

She put her phone in her pocket and walked to the bus stop. There were messages every day now. Who was it? Why were they doing it? The phone beeped.

candybear76: freak!

Now even her friends weren’t talking to her. Becky was the only one who was still friendly. She was Kay’s oldest friend. The phone beeped again. It was a comment on her Facebook photo.

princesspusheen: No one wants to look at you. Loser!

Kay felt really upset. She was trying to delete the messages and block the users. But more messages came from different names. Becky thought it was a hacker. Kay contacted the sites telling them what was happening but they didn’t answer.

Becky was waiting at the bus stop. 'Hi, Kay, are you all right?' 'No. There were more messages this morning. Do you think I should go to the police?' 'Maybe,' said Becky. 'But I don’t think they can help. I think he’s using anon.com. Hackers use that website to hide their identity so the police can’t find them. Anyway, I think I know who it is ...' Just then the bus came and they got on.

There were lots of kids from school on the bus. Kay thought they were all looking at her. Julie McGann was talking quietly to her friend. They both started laughing. Kay and Becky sat down. 'Who is it?' asked Kay. 'Shh! He’s sitting at the back. Don’t look!' Kay looked around. Ollie Jones was on the back seat, looking at his phone. 'But why?' asked Kay. 'You finished with him, didn’t you?' said Becky. 'What? We weren’t going out,' said Kay. 'And I don’t even like him.' 'Yeah, well I heard he really liked you.'

That day at school was really bad. When she didn’t have classes with Becky no one sat next to her or talked to her. There were more messages.

anookins2014: What happened to your face?

pixiestar: You make me sick.

bellatricks17: Everyone hates you!

By lunchtime Kay was really upset. Mrs Gibson her music teacher saw her crying and Kay told her everything. She offered to go to the police with Kay. She said they were better at finding cyberbullies now. The bell rang. It was time for class.

Kay had ICT next. Her class was in the computer room, but the teacher wasn’t there yet. Becky was in a different group for ICT. Everyone went quiet when Kay came in. There was only one computer left. She moved the mouse and saw the website. It was called hatekay.com. There were photos of Kay but they were changed to make them look horrible. There was one of Kay that looked like a zombie. There was a message at the top of the page:

Like this page if you hate Kay Granger.

There were more than 100 likes. Her phone beeped.

unknown number: I’m watching you.

Kay ran from the room and didn’t stop until she got home. She didn’t go back to school that week. She didn’t switch on her computer or mobile phone. On Monday, Mrs Gibson called. The police thought they knew who the bully was. Kay decided to go and tell Becky.

Becky was in her bedroom working on her computer. They started to talk, but then Becky’s mum opened the door. She looked worried. 'Becky, can you come downstairs?' Kay stood up too. 'Could you wait here please, Kay?'

Kay waited, but Becky didn’t come back. Then the computer started beeping. It was a message. Kay looked at the screen. She couldn’t believe what she saw. There were photos of Ollie Jones. Some of them had kisses around them. There was one of Becky and Ollie together. There was a message at the bottom of the screen. Kay clicked on it and a website opened up. It was anon.com. It was Becky’s home page. Just then the door opened. It was Becky’s mum. She was very upset. There was someone standing behind her. 'Kay, this policewoman wants to talk to you.'

Thank you for the reply, ginaggianphi!

I'm sorry to hear that you have a cold, but I hope you'll get your second wind soon!
I'm fine now and I've been feeling sleepy since a new semester started. I could sleep like a log all day!!

Aha! I know we are strangers and live in different countries! I just imagined a thrilling meeting just like a real world!!!!
By the way, I didn't know much about Adam Khoo, so I googled him. [clackety-clack]
Hmm…he looks like a successful businessman. Do you want to be like him in the future?ツ

I just read your comments between you and Harina. You are so happy to have a close friend.
(Hmm I think that Adam Khoo is famous in Singapore. His books are bestseller in Vietnam. " I am gifted,so are you" is the most famous book.
And I respect the first president of Singapore so much.)
I just want to be a teacher in the future. But I also want to be a student of Nation University Singapore.
I am very good at math and chemistry, What about you? What subject do you like most?

Hi gianggiangphi!
Harina? I remember Hadia and I got a great chemistry when we met on this site. She's pretty nice girl! It's amazing to become close friends so naturally because of the chemistry! We respect each other and find ourselves encouraging!

By the way, I didn't know about Adam Khoo's book, 'I am gifted, so are you'. The title sounds a bit nonsense, doesn't it?! I prefer this: "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." -Thomas Edison-

Wow, how wonderful your dream is! I'm sure you'll be a good student of National University Singapore!
Well, well...I think I'll aim at the same goal as yours!!? I want to study at faculties of humanities in the university!
May I ask you how come you want to be a teacher, gianggiangphi?

Uhmmm, I don't want to talk about Adam Khoo any more ( haha)
I want to be a teacher because both my mother and my father are teachers. My mother teaches Literature at a secondary school and my father teaches Math at a high school, but he doesn't work any more.
Teachers are the people who build a country. A country will develop when government realize teaching is of great importance ( can I boast my opinion a bit? haha)
( Elsa, How do you know that Hadia ( sorry for writing Harina) is a pretty nice girl?
And according to me, people won't be successful if they don't have good strategy ( although they work very hard)
( If you don't mind, You can read my introduction on " introducing you on a blog" of this website)
best wishes ( Giang)

Hi Giang,
You're so smart and thank you for letting me notice an important point; 'How do you know that Hadia is a pretty nice girl?
I reflected looking for the answer and found that there was no evidence!! I just judged from what I talked with her and her picture (smiling cute girls!) on this website without seeing each other… I'm Alec actually (Sorry, Hadia, I'm not blaming you!). Well, I'm really impressed by your ability to get an insight into the true nature of someone! Amazing! You're gifted, so is Adam Khoo (haha)! I wish you were with me, I mean, a good friend who tells me the honest opinion!!

By the way, can I give my opinion as well about teachers and a country? I agree with you, however I see it slightly different. My grandma told me the story of her relatives who were teachers for generations. But when the regime changed (Military government), suddenly teachers at that time lost their jobs because they were incompatible with totalitarian ideology. I heard they had really hard time. So I'm not an optimist about a good relationship between the power and education! What do you think?

Lastly, again, you look really clever! I totally agree with you in that people won't be successful if they don't have good strategy ( although they work very hard)! I think that's the key which nobody tells!
Thank you Ginag, I read your introduction! I do want to hear you sing! I'll try to write my introduction later ♬♪♬

Hi Elsa007 and gianggiangphi,
It's great to see you having such long conversations here and practising your English. Please do remember though that there are lots of users on our site that would like to interact with you both. You don't just have to write comments to each other. Also, please don't try to work out personal information about any of our users. This breaks our House rules. You can also see that our website isn't designed for just two people to have long conversations - the formatting goes weird.
I hope this is all clear. Use the Contact us button at the bottom of the page if you have any doubts or questions.
Best wishes, Jo (LearnEnglish Teens Team)

Hi Jo,
I'm sorry for the trouble. I just wanted to respond to Giang's questions. Besides, I've quite often seen long Q&A and comments like a personal letter being posted on your Facebook page as if they were completely ignoring other users, so I just thought such conversations are allowed here as well! (although I'm wondering why adults' bad behaviors are overlooked but ours are...… is it because they are too late to change???)
Anyway, I won't post long comments including personal information. Your suggestion is right -' Our website isn't designed for just two people to have long conversations'---I wish your Facebook page owner to have the same opinion!! :)

Hi JoEditor, Some classmates of mine can speak English well and I see they use slang words. ( And I don't understand what they are talking) I know that slang is very informal language, but why do young people use it? Could you please help me explain this?

Thank for your advice. I will be stronger. ( The only person that I can count on is my mother, but I can't talk to her. There is an saying that: " Dont let your mother know if your are painful" so if I talked, mother would be very anxious. )
I think that sooner or later,my problem will be solved.

Hi MerNoire. I'm sorry that you didn't like the story. You are right that online bullying is a big problem for many teens but we hope that by reading this story, teenagers will recognise the signs of cyberbullying if it ever happens to them, and know what to do.

If cyberbullying has affected you, you can find some useful links on our Safety page and if you see anything online that upsets you, you must talk about it with a parent, teacher or an adult that you trust. Don't keep it to yourself.

Best wishes,

Jonathan (LearnEnglish Teens Team)

That's right, Jonsthan, and one more thing...!
Bullies happen even among teachers and adults regardless of the means in real life or on the Internet!! ....It's disappointing but ...as you suggested, I think the last resource rides on us, an individual plus the person that can be trusted...!

Thank god it is not a problem in my society...
I think the headmasters at schools should do something against the bullies to end it
and also teachers should give classes about being nice to everyone from grade 1

Totally agree, Toma! Luckily, in my new school, a majority of students are very friendly each other and it seems they were far from bullies or they are clever enough to handle the problems! I think afults, school masters and teachers, are responsible for preventing the bullies!

Oh God! It was her close friend!
I want you to know that bullies is your secret admirer, they want look like you but they can't. Bullies do bullying because they are jealous of you, that's okay don't think about them :)
Keep walking and shining, prove yourself that you are nice and shame on bullies for bullying you :)

Ah.. That's a good point, Nilih! A bully must be a kind of a stalker!! Sometimes I hear news that a stalker's murder crime because he or she can't get what they want. It's sad that the bully lack their ability to put things into perspective. Will education be able to help hem?? Maybe it's beyond my thoughts... Yes, let's keep walking looking up in the beautiful blue sky!!

I was a bullying victim. i think bullying can't stop so easily.... some people will feel happy if they hurt someone. i think to stop bullying phenomenon we must realize from yourself that bullying is a bad behavior and can make a karma in other time.

It's extremely sorry to be unable to stop the bully right away when I saw..., but at least I'm determined to avoid having an indirect hand in the bully who never apologize to the victims. For instance, I don't want to help the bully curse at someone even when they believe without anyone seeing! That low manner behavior really dissappoints me... We should be more aware of what the bully really means in a community. It's not a problem of you & me.

Unfortunately, yes. Insidious bullying is happening outside ken of teachers, I think we need to be more aware of avoiding us being bullied. Yet, it sometimes it takes time to identify someone's true face and enemy within!
Personally, I really don't want to waste my time for negative people who always search for a target to bring someone down for 'me me me'!! Not for ME…!! ;-)

In my school there is a lot of bulling in sports because when it is year 5's turn they say to year 6 "get off our court year 6" so it is mean. I think someone should have helped Kay because she was feeling lonely and sad, because no one was talking to her.

I would have never guessed that Beaky was the bully. =(

That is not nice. i would feel horrible... I would never forget the person who did it. No one wanted to help her they just went with the flow. There are two types of evil ones that do the evil and the people that watch the evil and pretended that they never do anything evil. Thanks :)
