Wearing a red nose for a day may seem like a strange way to raise money for charity. However, it seems to work in Britain.

48

Red Nose Day (RND) is a well-known event in the UK. The aim of the day is to raise money for a charity called Comic Relief which helps people in need in Africa and in the UK.

Red nose?

Comic Relief was started in 1985 by the scriptwriter Richard Curtis. He wrote the series ‘Blackadder' as well as the famous films 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Notting Hill'. Richard's idea to start Comic Relief was as a response to the severe famine in Ethiopia. It's called Red Nose Day as on this day many people buy a plastic red nose to wear! The money made from selling red noses goes to the charity.

When is RND?

Red Nose Day takes place every two years in the spring and is now so well established that many people consider it to be an unofficial national holiday. For example, many schools have non-uniform days. The next Red Nose Day is on 13th March 2015.

Money

The slogan for the last RND was ‘Do Something Funny for Money' and the money that was collected helped to fund projects in the following areas: treating malaria, education, maternal health and mental health. The BBC Red Nose Day telethon raised £74.3 million! Money-raising events take place all over the country and many schools participate. People also donate money by post, in banks, by phone using a credit card and online.

Getting sponsored

Getting sponsored to do something is a common way to raise money on RND. If someone sponsors you it means that they agree to give you a specific amount of money for your actions. Here are some ways that people raise money:
• Get sponsored to wear your pyjamas all day at work or in school.
• Get sponsored to grow a moustache or beard for a month.
• Ask colleagues or classmates for a donation to wear a red wig for the day.
• Get sponsored to give up chocolate, biscuits or crisps.

Red Nose Day is everywhere

In the evening of Red Nose Day a telethon takes place on the BBC TV channels. This is like a television marathon that shows a selection of the events of the day, as well as lots of comic sketches and reports of how the money raised will be spent. There’s a RND Facebook page and you can follow RND on Twitter. People also upload videos of local charity events on YouTube and Facebook.

So, if you are ever in the UK on Red Nose Day, now you know why you may find normal people wearing red noses and doing silly things! It's all for a good cause! If you want to find out more about the day, have a look at the official Red Nose Day website.

I haven't ever collected money for charity ,, I haven't ever donated for one :\ but I hope I do so ..
I have a Question ,,
One Direction the famous boy band in the UK made a song to collect money for comic relief ,, the song is called (one way or another) ,, the boys says somethings about the charity ,, Zayn Malik said : "Comic Relief (are) British charity that do amazing work helping people all over Africa and in the UK living with really tough lives ,,,, My Question is : Why did he say "Comic Relief (are)" and didn't say "Comic relief (is)" ?
I need a fast answer because I started preparing for school so I began with English and the first unit is about "Charities" and I'd like to write a paragraph about charities and comic relief will help me a lot ! :)

Hi! Good question. I'm not sure but I can think of two possible explanations. Firstly, it might be a mistake! People make mistakes all them time, even when speaking their own language. Secondly, some people say 'My family are ...' or 'The team are ...' or 'The government are', even though these are singular nouns. Can you see what these nouns have in common? They're all groups of many people. That's why some people like to use 'are' instead of 'is', especially British people, like Zayn. It's not as common in America. Good luck with your writing! :)

Right, with these nouns. But some teachers may prefer you to write the strictly correct grammar form e.g. 'My family is ...'. I would probably say 'Comic Relief is ...' instead of are, though.

Hi everyone!Charity is a great deal. RND is good way for it,like charity football games and charity conserts
as well. I live in Russia and when the Krymsk flood happened a lot of people from all country helped them. In my parents jobs people collect things and sent to victims. If I see poor man I sometimes give him a little.

Hashi, I completely agree with you, great comment;). We have to make them independent, to give them a real help, not just money, but to show them the way to overcome all the difficulties. The most important is the safety, they must have a job to maintain their family and only if they can afford their children the basic life conditions, they can feel normal and independent. It is crucial to provide job to all people in need who can work, but one man can do nothing. We all should link together and help those in need; otherwise we could ruin all that people were creating for years.
There is one chinese proverb: If you give fish to man, he'll eat for a day. If you learn him to fish, he'll eat whole his life. Therefore, the knowledge and skills are the key to the brighter future for all the humans.

I have been thinking about it a lot, but I didn't do something like that. I would really like to do something good for community and charity work and giving backs can really help our spirit and it means a world to people in need. After seeing this, I will seriously think about charity work.
In Pirot(city in my country)students have organized a kind of charity organization. Actually, they decided to give up the clothes for the Prom and to collect money for poor people. I really appreciate that. Here, in Serbia, youngsters give more than 200$ for clothes, than you have to pay a hairdresser, make up etc., and it all costs about 350$. They realized it is a pity to give so many away and the better option would be to help someone who needs help. They will collect about 5000$ and it's a big sacrifice. I don't know if I could do something like that, to give up that significant moment. Some of them don't agree with their decision, but I hope they will fulfill their dream.

Hmmm... RND is very good idea, I have to tell it. (^w^) But Polish people never heard something about RND. So... Maybe tell them about it?
