Mmm ... do you fancy a tasty bag of crisps? Or how about a yummy chocolate bar? British people love their snacks. Find out more about some popular British snacks. Don't read if you're hungry!

Snack facts

Young people in Britain eat more snacks than people of the same age in other European countries. A recent survey has discovered that 64% of under 20-year-olds snack between meals. How does this compare with other countries? 58.7% of young people snack in Germany, 53% in France and only 40.7% in Spain. What are these young Brits eating? Savoury snacks, especially crisps, are the favourite snack in the UK.

Snack researchers found that the average person in Britain spends 43 pounds on savoury snacks each year, compared with 12 pounds for the French and only 7 pounds for the Italians. British people are spending a total of about 2.8 billion pounds a year on savoury snacks!!

Crisps

What are crisps exactly? They are very thin slices of potato, cooked in oil then covered in salt or other salty flavours. British people are mad for crisps and they like them in a huge variety of flavours. Some of the most popular flavours include cheese and onion, salt and vinegar, steak and onion, roast chicken, tomato ketchup, and cheese and bacon.

A crisp-making company held a competition recently to find new exciting flavours for their crisps. The competition was called ‘Do us a flavour’ and the company received more than a million suggestions for new flavours. The finalists included squirrel flavour and onion bhaji flavour. The winner was builder’s breakfast, which tried to replicate the tastes of a full English breakfast including bacon, eggs, sausages and beans. The flavour was suggested by Emma Rushin of Belper, Derbyshire, who won £50,000 and 1% of future sales of her flavour. You can’t find builder’s breakfast crisps in the shops now – they were discontinued after one year. If you want to know what kind of crisps are most popular with people in the UK you can find a list on ‘The crisp list’ which describes itself as a website ‘for people who love crisps’.

Chocolate

The British love chocolate. In fact, they spend more on chocolate than any other European country! If you go to any newsagent’s shop in the UK you’ll see a huge selection of chocolate bars on sale. There is milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate. There are small bars of chocolate, medium-sized bars and massive bars of chocolate. You can buy mint-flavoured chocolate, chocolate-covered peanuts or raisins, chocolate with nuts, chocolate with toffee ... the list is endless! One brand of chocolate bar recently asked viewers to try four new flavours of a chocolate and then vote on Facebook for their favourite. The bar with the most votes will be permanently added to their range. Big chocolate eggs are sold in newsagents', sweet shops and supermarkets around Easter time. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles buy Easter eggs for children at this time of year.

Health

While crisps and other savoury snacks can be delicious, many people are worried that young people eat too many of these kinds of foods. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a government organisation that is responsible for food safety and food hygiene in the UK. The FSA issued a warning recently that many children's snacks contained dangerously high levels of salt.

Some parents are unhappy that their children can buy snack foods that are high in sugar, salt or fat such as sweets, biscuits and crisps from vending machines in schools. Some schools have banned these types of vending machines.

Advertising and marketing is another controversial area. Some people feel that advertising for junk food and unhealthy snacks should not be directed at children and teenagers. One opinion is that young people should be protected by a ban on this kind of advertising before 9 p.m. on TV and that there should be more controls over websites, sponsorship and in-store promotions. What do you think?

What are your favourite snacks? Are they healthy? Do you agree that there should be more controls to protect young people from unhealthy snacks?

Well, let's say I'm not surprised.
It's almost common knowledge that snacks aren't the healthier food you'll find around.
But it's not that hard to keep away from them. You can have with you some home made food for when you're hungry. Maybe a sandwich.

My favorite snack is chips, which isn't healthy at all. I think that young people should at least get a chance to decide themselves, but I still think that parents should look after - more or less - their child and what they eat. After all - children and teens are still young and you can't really expect them to always make their right choices, especially when it comes to snacks.

My favorite snack is candy. Candy is very unhealthy mostly because of the high sugar content. I really don't think it's necessary to make controls to protect the children. The parents need to learn their own kids how to control themselves. It's not the advertisers problem.

Hello. My favorite snack at the moment is Ben & Jerry´s. And no, they are not healthy, but I don´t I eat them a lot;) I think that it´s quite hard to stay away from unhealthy snacks if you don´t have someone to help you eat less salt and sugar. I don´t think that more controls to protect young people from different sorts of snacks is necessary because I dont´t think that it would get any better. I think it´s enough with a parent, a sibling or a friend to help you eat right.

My favorite snack is swedish candy. It's not very healthy, but i eat it anyways. I don't eat it every day though. I think that the advertisment should be more limited than what it is right now. The young people easy gets affected by these advertisments, so it's really important that we try to control the atvertisment.

Hey everyone, my favourite snacks is chocolate. No, chocolate is not healthy. I think if we never going to do something about it, it will be worse. Young people have to learn what is good to eat and what is not good to eat.

Hello!
My favorite snacks is small cookies, especially maryland cookies. They are not so healthy but they taste really good. I think parents should protect young people against fat and unhealthy food, and cookies.

My favorite snack is crisp and candy, these are unhealthy because it contains salt and many other unhealthy things. I think that the parents can check so you doesn't eat to much unhealthy things when you are young.

My favourite snack is chocolate or perhaps some types of cakes. These are however very unhealthy which is a problem. I actually dosn't think that young people needs to be protected from this kind of food but their acess to it should be limited. Having vending mashines in school is just a stupid idea but one bar of chocolate each weak isn't so bad. Sure, people who can't control their purchases should be controlled by thier parents but that isn't the case for everyone.

My favourite snack is chocolate and i also enjoy chocolatebars. They are really unhealthy and i'm aware of that. In my opinion you should always be able to know what you are eating and there should be an explanation wierd stuff in the description. Schools should'nt be allowed so sell snacks and chocolate even tho it's nice. Maybe like once a week like we have at my school but not every day. And as said, if more people get to know what they are eating maybe they would'nt eat as much as before.

Hello Ellen. Wow so many questions for me. I'm quite well, just tired a bit. I'm a girl,17. I love it so much but I have no opportunity for travelling 'cause I'm a student...you know, I mean age and financial affairs:) but in the far future I'll hit the road)) I don't work at all at the moment. Yes, communicating with people sometimes is a helpful and meaningful thing because everyone who appears in your life can teach you to solve problems when you need it the most. What about countries. I have been to Egypt. My goodness:) I had the experience of a lifetime! The country was beautiful around there and people were so friendly and kind. Even though I've only been there for a short time , I've made quite a few new friends. The staff was highly qualified and not rude) so that's all for now)

Are you kidding guys? All of this are terrible for health-_-...Crisps contain a huge amount of fat and salt...apart from coke which includes artificial additives and there are about ten teespoons of sugar in each can. It literally destroys your precious teeth and you often get a stomach ache after drinking it . I don't even mention about tooth decay=\ As far as eating too much junk food can result in health problems later in life (obesity) I think that foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, steamed fish and boiled chicken, etc. are better. Hi ellen, thanks for your kind words. Astara and Ardabil are very beautiful city with wonderful air and scenery. Which city would you like to visit in Iran?
I will travel to your country with my parents and I'm sure we will enjoy because your country is very nice and has many historical sites. I will go to my parent’s birthplace too and visit my grandparents.
I like to travel so much, because it’s very interesting. Traveling is due to experience and learning about different cultures. I prefer indoors work than the outdoors work at this time and I should be changing my idea in the future. I like talking to people because you can communicate by talking with others and learn many things by talking. I like organizing things and enjoy it. I’m patient but not so much.
How do you typically deal with stress?
