Have you heard of Oxford University? Students from all over the world come to study in the UK at Oxford and other universities. In this video you’ll meet some of them and see how they live.

This video is part of our Word on the Street series. Word on the Street is an exciting new English Language teaching programme co-produced by the BBC and the British Council.

Discussion

Are you hoping to go to university? What would you like to study?

Does university life at Oxford look very different to going to a university in your country?

Hi falleetto,

Thank you for all the comments that you posted on this page. Unfortunately I had to remove them as they were not on the topic of the page.

Please could you post your comment on the page where the discussion question you are answering appears? For example if you are writing about a film you saw yesterday, you could post it here:

https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/grammar/beginner-grammar/past-simple-regular-verbs

(Discussion question: What did you do yesterday? Tell us about your day.)

or here:

https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/skills/writing/upper-intermediate-b2-writing/skyfall-film-review

(Discussion question: What films have you seen lately? What did you think?)

Thank you :-)

Best wishes,

Jo (LearnEnglish Teens team)

Hi guys ! I'm from Vietnam. Yes, I'm hoping to go to university. I would like to try to join fencing club. It makes me interested, very good for health. I also like playing Billard although I don't know how to play :)
University life at Oxford is very different from my university. It's so convenient for students because there're many services around the university, such as a laundry, a Billard club, a canteen, a TV room and so on. My university of course can't be as big as Oxford university. What a nice school ! I love ! I wish I could go there ♥️

I'm from Moscow, Russia. So, I would like to enter MGU (Moscow State University), which is considered to be highly prestige. However it is the best university in my country, thats why I think entering exams might apper too difficult for me. But I wish I could pass them! It would just be amazing to study world history and literature there!
As for studying at Oxford University, it sounds like a dream to me. But if I could have a chance, I would be extremely happy to join its students! =)

Studying in Oxford would be a dream come true. Infact studying in any foriegn university would be wonderful. Its not that the universities in my country are bad. But the whole "university" experience is availabele only in limited institutes like the "IIT's".

I think, that nowadays to go to university is very important to get a job with high salary in the future. And university life in Oxford looks like any university life in my country. I would like to study in a foreign country to find new friends and to learn the culture of some other countries.

Well, it must be a very different environment from my country's university. Once day, I will come to Oxford but not because of studying, just visiting!

I have one grammatical doubt-Do we say "on Earth" or "on the Earth"? I tried to find out an explanation, but I couldn't. Does Earth should be written in capitals?

This is a tough question. :-) There isn't a clear rule. I searched and found these common phrases:

  • without "the": What on earth? / How on earth is this possible? / Aluminium is the most common metal on Earth. The South Pole is the coldest place on Earth (superlative + on Earth). / Scientists are investigating how life on Earth began.
  • with "the": on the earth's surface / on the surface of the earth / Climate change will have a terrible effect on the earth.

Earth can be written with or without the capital E, but since "earth" can also mean the ground or the soil, use a capital letter especially when talking about the planet.

Also notice that in the world (same meaning as on Earth) always has "the".

And one thing more, Linh:)
It's important to know that Oxford requires you to apply a year before you have finished a high school, because their selection process takes more time than at other universities-you have a few interviews, tests etc. What would you like to study there?

Hi, Linh:)
I haven't study at Oxford yet, but I was at Oxford's open day once(open day is the day when you can ask whatever you want about applying process, studying etc.), and I felt very agreeable there. People and the whole stuff were very kind, and they gave us many information about studying at Oxford. I recommend you to study there, if you have a chance, because in my opinion, Oxford is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and it's a real honor to be their student. I wish to study there, and I've already started to with preparation for Oxford. I recommend you to go to their site(www.ox.ac.uk), and to find out all information you need.
I hope this was helpful:).
