Learning to love Germany

by :

There’s no denying it: I love the UK!

I love tea; I love red double-decker buses; I even love complaining about the weather. But, for now, I’m working as a language assistant at a school in Lemgo, which is a small town in Germany. Although there are many things that I definitely miss about my home in England, there are many fun, interesting, and even brilliant things about Germany too. So, since I will be here for six months, it’s time I started finding things to love about this country!

Here are just a few things that I have grown to love so far:
Cycling
So many more people ride their bikes here than in the UK. Even old ladies do it! I am not a very sporty person, but I absolutely love cycling. It’s easy, free, and just as healthy as walking, even though it’s much quicker.

Food and drink
The Germans are not well known for their cooking skills (unlike the French or Italians), but I still love it. Who doesn’t love Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake), or Bratwurst (sausage) with potato salad? I certainly do. The beer in Germany is great too. My favourite type is Altbierbowle, which is a kind of beer cocktail made with beer, fruit syrup and pieces of real fruit! Delicious.

Language
Learning the German language is the main reason that I came here. Many people say that German is a harsh-sounding language, or that it is needlessly complicated. I disagree. Although there are some things that are tricky, once you have mastered the basics it’s very rewarding. I especially enjoy finding the words that don’t translate into English. For example, fremdschämen means to be embarrassed for someone else, and Suppenkoma is the feeling of tiredness after eating. Why don’t those words exist in English?

So, there is a very short list of things I am growing to love about Germany. We British still make the best tea, of course. But the Germans are good at a lot of things too! I’m sure I will discover more throughout my stay here.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my experiences. See you next time!

Well, Pakistan! Wow!! I feel really special, happy and amazing when I think about my dearest Country Pakistan! It's a Holy land or we say it as " Pak Sarzameen! The vast meadows, the green tablelands, the dancing flowers, the glossy leaves, the swaying trees, the high mountains, the glittering sky, the blooming stars, the four seasons, the chirping birds, the shining Sun, the Great personalities, the Warmhearted and loving people, the moral values, the beautiful language "Urdu" , the national flag, the flowing streams, the tasty foods, the lovable culture and tradition, the harmonious anthem , the educated people, the peaceful land! What more a country should have..................................... I thank Allah Almighty for bestowing me with such a beautiful and peaceful land. I love my Country a lot and always pray for it's success and development. It came into being by the hard work of our ancestors and Muslims who lay down their lives for it's making. It has given birth to great leaders who secured martyrdom for the Defence and their love for Pakistan! I love my Country a lot

I won't say much about my country, because only thing what I like about it is language ;)
I have been to Ireland, and I can say, that I love weather there. It's raining there near all time. I love rain. I miss it in Poland, because usually we have dry weather.

It's funny that you love rain - most people in the UK or Ireland would love a bit of dry weather! But it does make the countryside very green.

I love Ukraine because it's my motherland) But there are alot of reasons why I love it:
1. Ukraine is famouse by it's black soils and wheat fields. Also it's big country.
2. Ukraine has high mountains on the West, seas on the South, woods on the North and mines on the East
3. Ukrainian language is very melodical. We compare it with song of nightingale.
4. Ukrainian cuisine is really varied.
5. Here is many historycal places and museums etc...
I'm happy that I'm Ukrainian)))

It's a great thing to love your country so much!

I have also heard that the Ukrainian language is very beautiful, though I have never actually heard it myself.

I don't love Montenegro much. I love montenegrian beaches and really good weather in summer. Montenegro has got lots of mountain and green fields and that is one thing I love about Montenegro.

You can eat Falafel in England too! I wonder if it tastes the same as in Egypt. I think food is a great thing to love about a country.

Serbia <3
I love many things about it; I like our language, Serbian language, our tradition, our religion, our festivals, celebrations, fashion, style, music, folklore dance, our sweets and some food, even our politics, and almost anything about it. I love Serbia <3 <3 <3, and I'm proud of being a Serbian girl. I think there's no place like motherland, and that feeling of belonging you can't find at any other place. I didn't live in Serbia for a long, long time, and I moved here like 5 years ago, and I'm so happy because of that. Serbia and Serbians really make me happy and when I'm in Serbia, I feel completed.

Hi Natalija,

I loved hearing about the things you love about Serbia. It makes me really want to go there! I love the way you write about your home - I think you've captured really well what it means to belong to a country.
