What to do when it's sunny

by :
Jane Bristow

Often in Scotland it can feel like the only difference between summer and the rest of the year is it generally doesn’t snow (this isn't a guarantee!). But when the weather is good it’s a truly special place – here are some things you can do when it’s nice.

See
With the richest wildlife across the UK, take the chance to see some of the less common sites. On the West coast of Scotland there are lots of places you can take a boat trip to see minke, killer and even sperm whales. If you prefer dolphins you can see the most northerly colony of bottlenose dolphins in the world just off Inverness in the Moray Firth. Also by boat you can see colonies of puffins on the Isle of May near Edinburgh. Of course it’s likely you’ll see seals and loads of other animals on these trips too.

Do
It may not have the glamour or warmth of a trip to Hawaii but people say the waves of Thurso right in the north of Scotland can be just as good. If you’re not feeling brave enough to go in the water and prefer to watch from the safety of the shore then there’s several major surf contests held there including the ASP World Qualifying Series and on occasion the European Surfing Championships. For beginners you might want to head further south to Pease Bay near the English border.

Another very Scottish activity ideal for good weather is ‘Munro Bagging’. Named after Sir Hugh Munro, the 218 mountains in Scotland over 914m high are called Munros and walkers try to see how many they can climb in a set amount of time. This is not an easy option though – conditions can change suddenly and many of the routes are very tough.

Eat
Thanks to a large Scottish-Italian population there are far too many specialist ice cream sellers and parlours to list them but one of the most famous of them is Nardini in Largs, Ayrshire. Not only can you watch people actually make ice-cream but you can sit and eat in a beautiful refurbished 1930s building facing the river Clyde. There’s even a piano player at the weekends.

If you're feeling hungrier go to the north of Edinburgh where the coast of Fife is still home to lots of fishing villages and unsurprisingly this means there’s some excellent places to get fish and chips: Anstruther Fish Bar is one of the best of these and always busy. Here you can eat you dinner inside if it rains or on a bench looking over the harbour for a truly British experience. For the truly brave you can even try a battered mars bar.

So what do you do when it’s sunny?

Discussion

Which of the activities in Jane's blog post would you most like to do? What do you do when it's sunny where you live?

Hi, Stela:)
Yes, I had an opportunity to learn a lot from traveling abroad, and it was a nice experience. You're right, Serbia doesn't deal with weather well at all times. At the moment is so hot, that I can't stand it, but just last winter I was freezing. Albania seems to have a nice weather, you're lucky about it:). I wish we had summer all the time. I know Albania has sea, so it must be agreeable to have it in your own country. Thanks for your warm invitation, Stela:). I hope I'll have the opportunity to go there.
Greetings from Serbia:)

What I would most like to do is eating ice cream. In Japan when it’s sunny I usually go shopping in the cool shopping mall and get some favorite drink.

Serbia, unluckily, doesn't have sea, so I can't go to the beach:(. But we have Ada Ciganlija, and it's called Serbian sea, but it's not a real sea, but it's very agreeable for hot days and very popular among Belgradians. I wish we had sea, but it's impossible. I live in Belgrade, so I always go to Ada Ciganlija to swim in summers, and I always go riding, rollerblading etc. I like to completely enjoy in summer days, because it's my favourite season. Although summer in my country has many advantages, it has disadvantages as well; summers here can be really hot, too hot, so sometimes people don't dare to go outside, esp the old and ill people, and the highest temperature is about 42 C. But I don't mind, it doesn't influence my health and I can deal with Sun very well:). I also eat a lot of ice-cream in summer, fruits, and drink water, always wear sunglasses, a hat etc. But the majority of summer I usually spend abroad, in Span the most, so I barely stay in Serbia for a few weeks.

Hey, Lavander:)
You said there weren't 4 seasons in your country. Do you have winter? Serbia does, and I wish we don't have it, because it's so cold, and freezing:(. I'm so looking forward to sunny days:).

Thanks, Natalija.
It's the North of Vietnam that has enough 4 seasons. The lowest temp there in winter is about 6 degrees Celcius. The spring is cold a little bit, and the fall is season people love most of all.
The city where I live is located in the South, which just has 2 seasons: a half of year is sunny and it's rainy for the rest. In 'sunny season', the sun shines bright all day (except at night of coures:)), the sky is clear and the rain barely falls. In 'rainy season' it rains a lot, the sky is grey with big clouds covering. The average temp in daylight is about 33-36 degrees C, sometimes may reach to 40 :(
We don't have winter, that's why I've never seen snow before. Sadly even in the North snow is impossible. I envy you because I'm curious to know how it feels when I touch snow. I wish I could make a snowman one day :D
Plz tell me more about your winter, Nat. At this time what kind of weather in Serbia?

Thanks for telling me more about Vietnamese climate, Lavender:). Serbian climate is so different; lowest temperature here at winter is about -25 degrees C, and once, many years ago, temperature was even -39 degrees C! Luckily, I wasn't born at that time, but people were freezing and many people died. Last winter in some cities at the East was about -27 degrees C and 13 people died. January is the coldest month, but in early December climate isn't so bad, temperature is about 5 degrees.Winters here can be really bad, and sometimes I just wish to go to bed, cover myself with blankets and sleep for hours. But it's impossible, and winters can be so cold, that we usually have shorted classes at school at winter, and once we even didn't go to school for 2 weeks, due to snow and cold weather. Although I don't like winter very much, I must admit it has some advantages, like making Snowman with your friends, observing snow when it falls, playing with it in many ways, making snowballs etc.
I think summers have so many advantages-you can play any sport, go to seaside, eating ice-cream:) etc. At the moment is very warm in Serbia. Temperature is about 32 degrees, although summer hasn't started yet. In summer, the highest temperature is about 39 degrees, and it's usually 37 degrees.

Natalija, reading your reply made me interested :) I have not imagined how people could die of being cold. Here people barely die due to weather (I mean, cold and hot), just die in natural disasters. We normally suffer about 10 storms in a year.
Hey can you tell me how long winters last in Serbia? I'd like to know more :)

The city where I live doesn't have 4 seasons. I can say the sun shines throughout the year. In addtion , the sun is so strong, therefore people here tend to avoid the sunlight. When it's cloudy, it's perfect time to go outside, go travel and enjoy the weather. For me, I'd like to go to the beach when it's hot (luckily it's 20km from my house to there), but NO sunbathing ^^
