Learning a new skill abroad

by MeganH

So far my time in France has been like a rollercoaster, I’ve had my ups and my downs. I have been living in France for almost two months and I’m definitely becoming homesick. There are several things I miss about my hometown and Britain in general, for example: crumpets, English Breakfast tea and Indian takeaways!

Nevertheless, I’m still enjoying my Year Abroad. I decided very early on that I would like to learn a new skill while in France, sometimes I like to hide away in my room to watch TV or to read a book instead of talking to French people. Therefore, I decided that I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. I have always wanted to play a musical instrument but I never had the time or the patience, however, I’m much more relaxed in a small French town than a huge city!

The most difficult thing about learning a new skill, especially a musical instrument is that there is a lot of specific vocabulary, words I don’t even know in English. However, my teacher is very patient (both with my speaking skills and my guitar skills!) and as a result, I’m learning a lot more and now I'm a lot more confident when I speak French.

I’m so happy to be learning to play the guitar, hopefully when my year abroad ends I will be playing for my friends and family!
