Porridge – a perfect breakfast?

by ElizabethBlogger2017

Porridge. It doesn’t have a very tasty name, does it? It doesn’t have a very tasty reputation either. I’m here to try and convince you that porridge isn’t boring and tasteless, that it can be a delicious, convenient and very healthy way to start the day.

If you’ve never eaten it (although you probably have!), porridge is a type of food served for breakfast. It is usually a type of grain, like maize or oat, mixed with either milk or water, and often heated up. It has a gooey texture – thicker than liquid, but not solid. This porridge base is very easy to digest, so it’s a very good option for people who are ill, and it provides long-lasting energy for the day.

Porridge preparation – the amount of ingredients and cooking time – depends on what you choose to use as your porridge base. If I’m cooking for myself, I put a very big handful of ‘rolled’ oats in a saucepan, add a little bit of water and about 200ml of milk, and let the mixture boil. I stir the porridge constantly, and it takes about five minutes to cook.

Once it’s cooked, the fun part is adding the flavours. Porridge alone doesn’t have a very strong flavour. Although some people think this makes porridge boring, I think this is what makes porridge exciting! It is like a blank piece of paper – you can add almost anything you want to the porridge base. Seeds, nuts and dried fruits are very healthy options to add and can give you energy for the day. But if you don’t like these, or you’re allergic, then syrups and chocolate are also very tasty options. (Just don’t add too much!)

One of the best things about porridge? You can make it almost anywhere in the world. Either oats or maize or both are ‘staple foods’ for many people across the world. You can usually buy big bags of either, then add local ingredients to make your porridge interesting – whatever is cheap and convenient to find, wherever you are. I am currently in Mexico, and I love to heat my oats up with milk, then mix in chia and pumpkin seeds and cacao nibs, and I put a layer of sugar over the top to make my porridge sweeter.

Porridge? Hopefully it sounds a lot tastier now!

Do you have porridge? What would you add to your porridge breakfast?

Hi, I eat breakfast every morning. I believe it is a great way to start the day. Most days, I have rice and curry. But I occasionally drink soup, eat pancakes, waffles, and a full English breakfast. My Grandma, sister, and mom eat Porridge nearly every single day for their breakfasts. They use neither toppings nor sugar on theirs. They only use salt for the seasoning. My grandmother told me that she made porridge with coconut milk when she was a small girl. I RARELY eat porridge because I DISLIKE the texture. But after reading your blog post and watching some other porridge videos on youtube, I want to try it. Now I am coming across recipes like overnight oats and many more unique porridge ideas. I think that the toppings like chocolate, chia seeds, and berries would definitely make a difference!!!

Porridge is my favourite type of breakfast. I'm absolutely fond of the pudding porridge which is made the same way as normally, but I add some pudding powder to the milk. Then I cook and finally I add some nuts, fruit, chocolate, yogurt, maple syrup and peanut butter (I love it!) I wouldn't be able to eat only oats with milk or water, I always prefer to prepare something more special!

Thanks for the article! Lots of nice words. Well, porridge is a staple food for many countries and many families prefer having this considerably healthy option to cereal that is packed with sugar. Though I know some brands like quick oats that I cannot call healthy just because of that reason. I usually have oats 2-3 times a week and prefer to boil for a while and add sliced apples and a pinch of cinnamon. Read recently that it's not great to ear it everyday as our intestines cannot digest it thoroughly.

The base of the porridge is not very tasty, but it is much better with chocolate or dried apricots.

I guess nearly no one's gonna read this comment anyway. but when it comes to eating this how AMAZING meal in my country... I wouldn't say the Polish eat porridge so often. As most of my foregoers wrote, they preferred it sweet with a grain of syrup, honey, fruits etc. and so did I.

Whenever I'm recovering from illness, I take porridge alone just with some salt. To be honest, I'm not eager to have oatmeal, because I feel like I'm a toothless infant... ₍₍ (̨̡ ‾᷄⌂‾᷅)̧̢ ₎₎
