In Victorian times, Britain was famous for producing things; it was known as ‘the workshop of the world’. I’m travelling to York to find out how this industrial past is still important for a newer industry: tourism.
Before planes, trains and cars, this was one of the best ways to travel.
Rivers and canals played a very important role during the Industrial Revolution. Barges like this were the lorries of their day, transporting coal to the factories and finished products around the country. Now they’re used for leisure and many canals have become a focus for cafes, restaurants and art galleries.
Amandeep: Thank you for the lift.
Bargee: Thank you. Bye-bye.
.....
Amandeep: Steam trains replaced the canal boats and became great symbols of Britain’s industrial past. And they’re still attracting tourists from around the world today.
There is a huge collection of them here at the National Railway Museum.
.....
The museum has its own workshed where engineers restore these incredible machines to their former glory.
Amandeep: Chris, how much work goes into restoring these trains?
Chris: Well, there’s a lot of work involved. We work on them virtually every day, repairing them and maintaining them to make sure they can operate properly and safely.
Amandeep: Why is it important to keep them and show them?
Chris: Basically, it’s important educationally to show the young generation of how railways used to operate in older days, so it’s a link from the past that’s brought to life in present day.
…..
Amandeep: Like so much of Britain, these streets are full of history. This is the old part of the city of York. Tourists love to come and experience this historic area.
Woman 1: I think visitors come to Britain because of the shopping and the history.
Man 1: It is actually a very nice country, you know. Lots of historical places in Britain.
Man 2: I think visitors come to Britain for the culture, for the historic sites and because it’s different from anywhere else in the world.
…..
Near to York Castle, there’s a museum that's created a street from the past.
Wow, this is like stepping back in time! I’m actually in a Victorian street museum. Visitors come here to travel back around 130 years. Natalie Kingston is a guide here and dresses up for her role.
Amandeep: Why do you think people like to visit this old street?
Natalie: I think people like to visit this street because it recreates the past. It was the first ever recreated street in the world. It was built in 1938.
Amandeep: What reactions do you get to being dressed up?
Natalie: The most common reaction to being dressed up is that people want to take photos of you and they like to have photos taken with you. People ask a lot more questions when you’re dressed up. Not just about the costume, but also about the street and everything in it.
Amandeep: Being here, I really do feel like I’ve been transported back in time.

Hi everybody.
Azerbaijan has many historic places. For example:
1.The Maidens Tower
The Maidens Tower is the symbol of Baku. The 32-meter Maidens Tower is one of the beautiful and mysterious archtectural monuments on The Absheron Peninsula. It has Eight floors. The walls are 4-5 meters thick. You can enjoy wonderful view of Baku from here. There the a lot of the tower you can see the inner city within the fortress walls.
2. The Shirvanshahs palace.
The Shirvanshahs palace was the most prominent architectural complex in the madieval city. After the earth quake the capital moved from Shemakha to Baku and the shah built this palace. The palace is a two storey building with service rooms on the ground floor. Built in the 15th century by Halilullah I , the palace remained untouched for a hundred years. In the complex you can see 14th cenrury Bei-Kubad Madrassa Mosque.
3. Ateshgyakh.
The Ateshgyakh ( 18th century), which means ^ home of fire ^, is in the village of Surakhany, 15 km from Baku.
They say these ancient fires gave Azerbaijan its name, which means ^ a lond of fires^.
Arab invaders destroyed all the cult temples of fire -worshippers on the territory of Azerbaijan.
Centuries passed and Islam became the country official religion.
Azerbaijan exchanged cultural values with many countries . One of them was India, where fire is still sacred today.
The Indians paid to the local ruler for the right to build cells, a prayer room and a guestroom at the temple.
The inscriptions on stones set in the walls, made in Sanskrit and Hindi, testify to the Indian origin of the fire- worshippers temple at Surakhany.
Today the temple is a unique monument of world culture.
4.Gobustan.
Gobustan... For some people it is a museum under the open sky, for the others it is just cold walls drawings of nice dancing men.
Gobustan is a miracle, and a sacred place. There isn^t rich nature, But more than 40000 years ago people came to Gobustan, carried out rituals and brought gifts. ^ Gobu^ means ~a place hidden from peoples eyes ~ in Turkish. There are a lot of pictures of men, women and animals. The oldest is a huge fish 4 meters 30 centimeters long. The drawn fish belongs to the class of whales.
Scientists puzzle over the drawing which seems to show a connection of the Caspian Sea and World Ocean.

I have read all the comments here and I am interested in historical places. My country Azerbaijan is also rich in historical places. Some of them were classifed as heritage places by UNESCO. I hope you would like to see our historical places as I would like to see yours.
I want to agree with Demy. There are so many historic places in Ukraine. I`m from Poltava. There was famous Battle of Poltava in 1709 between Russian and Swedish. So there is the Poltava battle field and museum of Poltava battle. Many wonderful churches like Monastery of the Exaltation of the Cross, monuments(The monument of Glory) are here. The symbol of our town is dumpling(pampushka). We also have a monument for it.
Wow, I've never seen a monument to a dumpling before. They must be a traditional and important food in your town. I wonder what the monument looks like, and I'd like to try those dumplings, too! To 'taste' the history!
Thank you Hanna and Demy for kicking off our discussion in such a wonderful way. I wonder who's going to be the next to teach us about their country's historic buildings!

Welcome to Poltava)))
Yes Hanna, but better welcome to Ukraine)))
Hi Jonathan!
Thanks for telling about the Tower of London. I have look a video! It is wonderful and funny!!! I have heard about this legend. Because I like history too much! I also know that there are a lot of ghosts. So I would like to came there and see everything!
I also love the castles. I like to look at and explore them. It is my unusual hobby. I gather a collection of photographs of historical places. I hope that my collection will soon extended with pictures Tower of London. It is my cherished dream is to visit Britain.
Thanks again. I am so happy, that I found this great site!!!
Hi Jonathan!!!Thanks for answer!
Yes,I have been in every this place. It is very wonderful! It is all situated in Kiev. What about another cities? Ukraine has really many ancient places to visit. Many beautiful places I see in Odessa,Kharkiv,Donetsk,Lviv and other cities. But the most of all are in Kiev. I can write about all Ukrainian ancient places, but it will take more than 10 pages)) Ukraine is really very beautiful! I saw a lot of famous European cities and Kiev can quite be beautiful around them! And in fact I heard, that Ukrainian language is second in the world about melodic. So if you like historic buildings I wish you to came in our country and see all this places by your eyes! All Ukrainian people wait you in Ukraine!!)
And can I ask you? Where do you live Jonathan? Is it United Kingdom?
Hi Demy! Thanks for your warm invitation! And well done for being so knowledgeable about history! Of all the places you mentioned, I'd most like to see the Golden Gate. I like castles and learning about what happened there in the past.
I am from the UK so let me tell you about my favourite historic building there. It's called the Tower of London but despite the name it's not just a tower but a whole castle. It's almost 1000 years old. There are lots of stories about the Tower, but my favourite is that the guards keep lots of ravens there because a legend says that if the ravens ever leave the Tower, then the Tower will fall. One last thing: in the winter time you can do a fun sport there in the (freezing cold) open air. Can you guess what it is? Have a look at this Word on the Street video! (The video's quite funny, too, by the way.)
To anyone: which historic buildings would you like to visit? And, can you tell us about a historic building in your country? Looking forward to reading your comments! :-D
