How many languages can you speak? Do you know how many languages there are in the world? Read this article to find out more about languages!

Instructions

Do the preparation task first. Then read the article and do the exercises to check your understanding.

How many languages can you speak? If you’re reading this, then you’re probably studying English – so you already speak at least two languages, or maybe more!

How do we use language?

We use language all the time, often without thinking. We use it to communicate with other people, give and receive information, and express our feelings and opinions. We also use language for entertainment – when we watch videos, listen to music or play games. When we can do these things in more than one language, we have more opportunities to communicate with people from other cultures, to learn and to have fun.

How many languages are there?

There are around 7,000 languages in the world. Some countries, like Indonesia, Nigeria and India, have hundreds of languages, and Papua New Guinea has the highest number, with more than 800! Today, many people live in multilingual societies, where using more than one language is part of everyday life. In fact, research suggests that more than half of the world’s population can speak two or more languages fluently.

Why is English called a ‘global language’?

English is one of the most widely used languages in the world today. It’s often called a ‘global language’ because people from many different countries use it to communicate. Interestingly, more people speak English as a second or additional language than as a first language. Millions of learners study it at school, online or in language schools. For many people, English is a key skill for work, travel and international communication.

Why is it good to learn languages?

Learning a language can be challenging, but it’s also exciting and rewarding. You might make mistakes or feel shy, but that’s part of learning. As you practise, you become more confident and can connect with people from different cultures. And remember, not all languages are spoken with your voice. Sign languages are important too, and they are used by millions of people around the world, especially deaf people.

How many languages should you learn?

There’s no simple answer. Some people speak two languages, others speak three or more. What’s important isn’t the number but the ability to communicate with others. In our connected world, where international communication is so important, languages are a powerful and useful skill – and they open the door to new people, ideas and experiences.

I really like English and in my opinion, I think learning a foreign language is extremely useful and exciting to me. Athough a new language is difficult to learn, when we learned it we feel very happy and self-confident. After learning foreign languages, I can communicate with my international friends. That sounds great!!!

Actually, I didn't have a knack for learning foreign languages at an early age. Until I was in 12th grade, a teacher inspired me to learn English. I loved her teaching method, and her knowledge is really sexy to me. From that time, I have been keen on trying to master English, but currently, my passion is gradually fading away cause no one can motivate me like her anymore. She is such an eminent teacher in my heart!

I started studying English when I was 6 grade. At this time, I was about to be swallowed by a great deal of strange lessons which I had not experienced before; I was always worried in appearance and my heart was likely to be ran away the chest whenever my teacher called loudly my name to give a answer. Fortunately, she gave me a hand herself and encouraged me to come over the fear and open the new phase of studying English for my life. Day by day, I could not realize when I was big on it exactly, study more and more until now the second year student. Reaching a higher level in speaking, listening; correcting mistakes in pronunciation, being self-confident in front of the crowded are the integral points I concentrate on. Besides, I am a beginner in Chinese class as well this September. Despite some trouble in getting used to a unfamiliar languages, now I am likely to balance and fine with it.

In addition, Korean is another my hobby of learning language. Because the popularity of Kpop and K-drama as well, I can understand a little bit what Koreans say. To be honest, learning others language is truly important for ourselves. It improves communication skill, helps us become extrovert. I have known English for over 5 years and I know a little more Chinese. I realize that learning foreign languages has become an indispensable trend in the era of global integration today. My mother once told me that English is an international language, so everyone should learn English so that they can have an advantage in accessing the knowledge of the world. For me, English is not just a tool for communication but it also opens up new opportunities. It helps me to get closer to many useful sources of information through books and materials that I have read during my study. Besides, I also make friends with many people from many different countries and they tell me about many cultures with a variety of customs and traditional identities about each of their countries. I also have a dream that someday I will be traveling to different parts of the world and I think there will be no useful tool or means other than English that can help me achieve that dream. English has given me so many benefits that I can hardly mention them and I will always appreciate those benefits.

Our teacher told us that there are people who speak English as their mother tongue, who use English as a second language and finally those who learn English as a foreign language. I'm the third type, a Vietnamese who won't stop learning foreign languages. I started learning English quite late, but I think I am quite good at this subject. Everyone says English is the key to success, and the language has become a compulsory subject for all Vietnamese schools. Currently, I am improving my English every day.

In addition to Vietnamese as the "mother language", I can speak English and a little Chinese. Now, I am in the process of learning another language, Japanese. When I first learned English, I didn't like it very much because I found it difficult for me. But later, in the process of learning from middle school to high school, I realized something interesting and the importance of this language to me. I feel that knowing at least one other type of language will be of great help to me. For example, I can talk to foreigners, or sometimes I'll show them directions, ...etc.

So I would like to learn a good way to speak in English. Without that, If I were to learn English in a good way, it would help me in a lot of ways. For example :I can speak with foreigners, I can get a better job e.t.c. If I speak English, I won't need to rely on translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy my favourite books, songs, films and TV shows. On the other hand by learning English. You will also learn about other cultures. Few experiencess will make you grow as a person more than learning the values, habits and way of life in a culture that is different from yours.so at last i would like to say that i hope one day i can express my words in a good way..
