In the UK, schools close for about two weeks at Easter time. Read on to find out more about how Easter is celebrated in Britain.

What does it mean?

Easter is a spring festival of new life. As a pagan tradition, it is the beginning of growth and new life after the cold, winter months. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn and spring – Eostre. For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and practising Christians attend special church services at Easter time. Easter celebrates life and rebirth, which is why we see lots of symbols of new life and fertility at Easter, like eggs, chicks and rabbits.

When is it?

Unlike Christmas, Easter isn’t on the same date each year. It takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Schoolchildren and students in the UK have about a two-week holiday at Easter time, which is almost as long as the Christmas holiday. It’s also the first public holiday after Christmas and everyone looks forward to their Easter break as a moment to relax, have a short holiday or visit family and friends.

Chocolate eggs

For most British children, Easter means chocolate Easter eggs. The shops are full of bright Easter displays decorated with chicks, rabbits and flowers, all with the objective of selling chocolate eggs in huge numbers. And it works! 90 million chocolate eggs are sold in the UK each year and each child receives on average eight chocolate eggs.

However, the eggs are sold in cardboard boxes and sometimes there’s more packaging than chocolate! Also, some people believe that too much chocolate is eaten and most doctors and dentists would advise people to eat Easter eggs in moderation.

Other 'egg-straordinary' traditions

In the UK, chocolate is definitely the most popular way to enjoy eggs at Easter. But there are some less sugary traditions, too. Chickens’ eggs are painted and decorated to give as presents, and eggs are also hidden for children to find as part of an 'egg hunt'. Some places even hold competitions to see who can roll an egg down a hill without it breaking!

There are other special foods too. Hot cross buns are typical cakes that are made at Easter time. They are spiced bread rolls with raisins and they always have a cross shape on top. They are delicious toasted with butter.

I live in Serbia and we celebrate Easter. Easter and Christmas are the biggest holidays for us, and we celebrate it with our families. We gather together for lunch and we break eggs. In my country also exist a kind of competition, when people can compete who'll break more eggs. I don't like that kind of competition, I even don't eat eggs, but Easter is still my dearest holiday. We make chocolate rabbits and bread in shape of rabbit. I like to make that with my mom, it's my dearest tradition about this holiday.

Hello RehinaParker. How are you?
I am 15 years old.
Azerbaijan has many historic places. For example:
1.The Maidens Tower
The Maidens Tower is the symbol of Baku. The 32-meter Maidens Tower is one of the beautiful and mysterious archtectural monuments on The Absheron Peninsula. It has Eight floors. The walls are 4-5 meters thick. You can enjoy wonderful view of Baku from here. There the a lot of the tower you can see the inner city within the fortress walls.
2. The Shirvanshahs palace.
The Shirvanshahs palace was the most prominent architectural complex in the madieval city. After the earth quake the capital moved from Shemakha to Baku and the shah built this palace. The palace is a two storey building with service rooms on the ground floor. Built in the 15th century by Halilullah I , the palace remained untouched for a hundred years. In the complex you can see 14th cenrury Bei-Kubad Madrassa Mosque.
And many others places!!!
And you?tell me somethink about your country.
Have you ever any brothers and sisters?
Do you like classical music?

When me and my friends celebrate Easter we like to hide Easter eggs in the garden or the house, whit candy in it. Some times we also go and look at an Easter bonfire.

I am from Sweden, and the way we celebrate is that we meet up with our closest relatives and eat good food. Like ham, eggs and sausages. In the evening we watch a good movie and eat ostbågar, a Swedish delicacy. We get a break from school for a week. There are different kind of ''easter candy'' like marzipan chickens and different kind of chocolate bunnies.

The parents usually fill big plastic eggs with candy and then hide them, and give their kids a map or a note with clues to find it. And when they find it they are greeted with a big egg filled with candy!
